Things to Bring & Pack

There are a few things backpackers should be sure to bring when staying at a party hostel specifically. These items include earplugs (for early mornings and loud roomates), a padlock (lock up your valuables BEFORE going out), headache medicine (always usefful!), and condoms.

Especially for the bigger European cities where pickpocketing is common we recommend wearing trousers with zippers. This limits the chances of stealing from your pockets.

Be Sociable

One of the best things about a hostel is being able to meet new people from every corner of the world. Be sure to talk to people and mingle. Travelling solo is great and life-changing, yet enjoying it with new friends can be even better. Locals especially, can show you hidden secret and some of the best spots in the city.

Our Insider Tips

As mentioned in the beginning, this guide is an extension of our article “Best hostels in Stockholm”.

Yet, we have written down more of our best tips for Stockholm. Check out the following:

What to drink in Stockholm:

Tasting Sweden’s many alcoholic beverages is the perfect way to prepare for an amazing night out in Stockholm. Whether you’re pregaming at two of these best party hostels in Stockholm or barhopping around the city, make sure to sample these drinks.

  • Aquavit: Aquavit is a traditional Scandinavian spirit that is popular throughout Sweden, especially in Stockholm. It’s made of distilled grain and flavored with herbs and spices.
  • Snaps: Snaps, similar to aquavit, is a traditional Swedish spit made of distilled grain. It is mostly consumed on holidays and in a shot glass.
  • Swedish beer: It’s a must to try the country’s national beer. Popular beer brands in Sweden include Pripps Bla, Norrlands Guld, Falcon, and Spendrups.
  • Glogg: Glogg is a spiced mulled red wine that is consumed during the winter months. It is simmered with various spices and served hot.

Unlike most places, venues in Stockholm prefer cards over cash, so there’s no need to carry large quantities of bills with you.

Remember that while the legal drinking age for beer and wine is 18, you must be at least 20 years old to purchase hard liquor in liquor stores, which are referred to as systembolaget, as regular supermarkets do not sell alcohol.

Stockholm Nightlife Safety and Tips

While Stockholm is generally safe, it’s important to be cautious, especially at night and when drinking. Given the rise in assault cases, women should be particularly vigilant. Follow these tips to stay safe in Stockholm:

  • Stick to populated areas: Opt for well-populated streets and avoid walking alone in empty areas, especially at night.
Keep your belongings secure: Keep valuables out of your back pocket to avoid pickpocketers. Use a money belt or a secure bag to keep your valuables safe.
  • Mind your drinking: Bouncers in Stockholm can be strict, and if you appear to be overly intoxicated, you may be denied entry into many venues. Furthermore, being drunk at night, especially as a tourist, can cause problems.
  • Watch your drink: Especially important for women, to pay attention to their drink to ensure it’s not tampered with. Always keep it within sight and be cautious when accepting drinks from strangers.
  • Use ridesharing apps: Avoid taxis and instead use ridesharing apps such as Uber, Lyft, and Bolt.
  • Use the SL – Reseplanerare och biljetter app: Luckily, the trains in Stockholm run 24 hours on the weekends. This app allows you to plan trips, find routes, and buy public transportation tickets.
  • Travel within a group: Safety is always in numbers, and going out in groups is always the best way to stay safe at night. We recommend going on a pub crawl with other travelers to visit international bars and clubs in Stockholm!

While staying at these best party hostels in Stockholm, remember that personal safety is a top priority, and exercising caution and common sense is one of the many ways to stay safe while enjoying the city’s incredible nightlife!
