A Hostel Story from Barcelona: He warned us, but we didn’t want to believe him!

I was backpacking with one friend during the summer of 2016. We were in Ibiza, and we were heading to Barcelona (here are our 23 fun things to do in Barcelona) the next day. So we looked for a hostel in Barcelona to stay in. The next day, when we arrived to Barcelona, we were very tired of one week partying in Ibiza, so we didn’t want to go out that night.

In the evening, we meet 2 guys from Australia who were in our room.

We started talking about our trips, and we got along very well. They invited us to go out that night, but we didn’t go because we were very tired.

After a while of hanging out with them, before they went out partying, one of them told us:

“Hey guys, please don’t get mad if I bring someone  in the room this night”.

Obviously, my friend and I told him “No, don’t worry, have fun!”. But we never thought it was actually going to happen.

So we went to sleep after a while and around 3:00 AM I heard someone was coming to the room. I noticed it was one of the guys with a girl, and they sounded wasted and start talking very quietly. After a while, I started to hear them kissing and laughing – in a flirty way. Then I started hearing weird noises and the bed moving, so I was like, “Shi**” is actually happening!”.

I decided to put my headphones on and try to sleep, even if it was difficult.

The next day I asked my friend, and he told me he also heard and that it was uncomfortable for him too. Before we checked out from the hostel, we saw the guy and told him. And he was like, “sorry guys, I hope you understand. And I have to say, I warned you”.

Nowadays, my friend and I laugh when we remember, but at the moment it was very uncomfortable.

Two Russian Spies in Rotterdam? A Hostel story

“It was a summer, when two young Russian guests came to our Ani&Haakien Hostel in Rotterdam to do the check-in. They were two friendly guys, maybe a bit serious, like people can be 🙂 They were carrying two suspicious long thin hard cover bags with them. With big eyes, I was fantasizing about two Russian spies with guns coming to our Rotterdam.

I asked the guys, what they are doing in Rotterdam and what they brought with them. They said they would go to an event and that they have their boats with them. So I mumbled a bit “Yeah yeah right, your floatable boat or what?!“ and my fantasy about them continued. They spoke poor English, so they didn’t understand my joke, as I didn’t understand their seriousness.

Later, when I went upstairs to do the laundry, I saw the “two Russian spies“ again. They asked me to come in their room as they wanted to show me something. I had my doubts, but okay, I went inside. They showed me two beautiful, detailed scale models of motorboats!

They were here to join a competition for that. So innocent and passionate about it, and they are traveling all over the whole world to show their beautiful boats.“

Two Russian Spies in Rotterdam? A Hostel story

A Paella Pan and a Harpoon, please!

My very first backpacking trip by myself started in Malaga, Spain. It was also my first time at a hostel, so I was really new to all this travel scene. At the hostel I met lots of nice people, and two 18-year-old guys from Berlin. We talked, had a beer or two, and after a while they told me they were celebrating their high school graduation with a flight to Malaga to travel around Spain.

They only had €80 with them for 2 weeks of travelling, and they spent already €15 on a paella pan and €25 on a harpoon – yes, a harpoon!

And no, they were not kidding – they were showing me their precious souvenirs. I left the next day for Tarifa, I’ve never seen the two weirdos again, and I have no idea what happened to them. They are probably still there figuring out how to get back to Berlin.
