Quick Introduction to Cyprus
Some historical context you need to know:
Cyprus is divided into South and Norther. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is so-called a de facto state and is only recognized by Turkey β who were the ones invading this part of the island. During the 1974βs Turkish invasion of the Island, pretty much all Greek Cypriots were forced to move south, while the Turkish Cypriots went towards the North. The city of Varosha is still a ghost town you can now finally visit. It was once a resort located in the city of Famagusta, Cyprus.
It does not take long for you to recognize the Turkish influence of the Northern part of Cyprus. You could argue, it is basically a mini-turkey.
Average price for a bed: Hostels in Cyprus cost 15β¬ β 25β¬ per night for a bed in a dorm. A private room starts from 23β¬ up to 45β¬ per night. This is a rough average just to give you an idea.
Prices always depend on season and holidays. Please always check exact rates on Hostelz.com or Hostelworld.com.
Check-In and Check Out: The average check-in time is from 15:00 (3pm), while the Check-Out time is before 11:00 (11am). Hostels usually offer luggage storage in case you arrive earlier or leave later. Make sure you check if luggage storage is free or if there is an extra cost.
Backpacking Tips for Cyprus: Before reading our top recommendations for the best hostels in Cyprus, have a look at these useful backpacking tips to make the most out of your time in the island country:
- Two modes of transportation are available in Cyprus; public buses and service taxis.Β There are no trains in Cyprus! The most convenient and cheapest way to explore the country is by taking a bus ride. Since bus lines connect most of the Greek side of the Island, you will be free to travel around without hassle.
- That being said, we personally recommend renting a car. It is so much easier to get around, affordable, and you will have the chance to see so much more. From the beaches to the mountains, there are plenty of things to explore that you cannot reach by bus. Check Discover Car Hire to see prices; they are our preferred website to check car rentals in Europe.
- Important: Typically, you cannot take your rental car from the South to North Cyprus. You will need to leave it at the border and then hire a driver in the North.
- Because Cyprus is a member of the European Union, EU citizens will only need their passports to enter the country. People with US nationality can also enter with their passports and do not need to re-apply for a visa. However, non-European citizens must apply for a short-stay visa before entering the country.
- The bespoke island country features exquisite traditional cuisines and some of the tastiest dishes youβll ever try. Some national specialities include souvlakia, shaftalia, afella, pita bread, loukoumades, and many more!
- Cyprus is famous for hosting festivals. The festive season is at its peak between autumn and spring, so if you find yourself there during this period, donβt forget to visit some of the countryβs most popular festival events.
- Make the most out of your time in Cyprus by visiting Petra Tou Romiou, considered the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite. In addition, you can also make a sort trip to Byzantine Kyrenia Castle and the Shipwreck Museum.

Being the last divided capital in the world, Nicosia is worth your time, money, and effort. The Southern part is easy and more shopping oriented. The big shopping mile is easy to wander around. Make sure you also go left and ride in the smaller alleys. You will find hidden gems like tiny cafΓ©s and churches.
Crossing the border is easy when you hold a passport that gets both visa easily. You can check this for instance with ivisa.com (affiliate link here).
You need to bring a valid passport with you for crossing the border. This border is not a joke or some silly inconvenience. It is actually a border controlled as well be United Nations as well as the European Union.
Also, in the Northern part you will need to pay with Turkish Lira. But, truth be told, they all accept EUROs as well as US Dollars. We had no issues. Also, payment via card is vey common.

We recommend to check what airport is cheaper for you and then start your itinerary from there. It does not matter too much where you start, really.
We use Skyscanner and Omio.com to find cheap flights and good connections all over the globe.
