Quick Introduction to Split
High-Season vs Off Season: Your experience will be completely different if you visit Split in high-season or off-season. The Off-season is from October/November to April/May, and prices are much lower and hostels can be even empty.
During high season the hostels are quite pricey for European standards
Summer prices, Average price for a bed: Hostels in Split cost 25€ – 40€ per night for a bed in a dorm. A private room starts from 60€ up to 100€.
Winter prices, Average price for a bed: Hostels in Split cost 7€ – 14€ per night for a bed in a dorm. A private room starts from 15€ up to 50€. This is a rough average just to give you an idea.
Prices always depend on season and holidays. Please always check exact rates on Hostelworld.com or Booking.com.
Hostel Quality: It may look like there’s a lot of fantastic places, after all there are design and boutique hostels. However, we consider the quality average; not very high standard. Zagreb has a much higher standard of hostels.
Better to stick with our recommendations in this list to avoid disappointments.
Check-In and Check Out: The average check-in time is from 15:00 (3pm), while the Check Out time is before 11:00 (11am). Hostels usually offer luggage storage in case you arrive earlier or leave later. Make sure you check if luggage storage is free or if there is an extra cost.
Ferry to the Islands: In the summer season, taking ferries is fairly easy. Always check with your hostel, they have the up to date schedules. However, in winter season the ferries are very limited, so plan ahead of time to avoid disappointment. A good resource to use is croatiaferries.com.
Nightlife: Nightlife in Split Croatia is one of a kind, it’s a party city. A great place to enjoy the Mediterranean summer lifestyle. However, we actually prefer Hvar Island for their nightlife; there’s some super cool Split hostels even offering boat tours, including drinks.

1. Hostel Dvor (Historic stone house, super comfy)
Hostel Dvor is one of the few absolute top-rated places to say; for good reason!
The building itself is already remarkable, an old stone house with modern interior. The ambiance is really easy-going, and due to the small sizes of dorms and its common area, it’s easy to connect with your hostel mates.
It is not a party hostel at all.
Yet again, easy to meet people.
So it can be perfect to meet and then head out to the city center for exploring or having a drink.

Location: Out of the 3 coolest backpacker hostels, Hostel Dvor has the longest walking distance to get downtown, yet only 10 minutes. There are shops around, ATMs, and restaurants. Hostel Dvor is located in Varoš, the oldest and a famous part of the city. The area itself is worth a visit.
The historic stone houses and the narrow streets are characteristic for the Varoš neighborhood.
In a nutshell, you are in the Old Town hustle and bustle in less than 10 minutes walking, but you stay in a quiet area for a good nights sleep.
(Especially when choosing a central hostel in Split, it could be loud due to bars!)
Hostel Dvor is the best place to stay for:
- Solo-Travellers
- Backpackers
- Small Families
Important to know: Hostel Dvor only opens in the peak season, from May to October.

The Simple Hostel is the absolute top pick, stylish and great location.
You can choose from Double Rooms to dorms, and stay in the heart of the city. Housed in an old building, the modern interior design makes this space sparkle.
You will enjoy the stylish and at the same time very comfortable dorms and private rooms. Seriously, it’s so comfy here. All rooms are equipped with Air Conditioning, which is super useful in the summer times.
The hostel has a small bar on-site, great to socialize. It even has a small kitchen to cook up your own meals. We think this is very handy, especially for the budget traveler.
Nonetheless, you have plenty of restaurants around to eat out.

What about cheapest hostels in Split?
Of course, there are always cheap accommodations.
We think, it’s not worth it to go with the cheapest hostel out there.
Why?
The quality differs a lot, and a lot of amenities are not included. This can be breakfast or linen. It is true though, Split is fairly expensive in the summer season, and you could save some money when choosing a cheaper Split Hostel .
So, if you are traveling on a shoe-string budget and you wanna save every penny, there are ways to find the cheapest places in Split.

Coolest Split Hostels for Solo Travellers?
First of all, if you fancy a party hostel as solo-traveller, then keep scrolling.
For a solo backpacker, a hostel is a good choice.
The best would be an accommodation that is social, fun, clean, and safe.
This is a very honest guide, and we struggle a bit with a definite answer. Why?
Because all of the 3 hostels we mentioned above are great for solo-travelers.
And it absolutely depends on the people you will be staying with; the hostel setup is there already.
If I were you as a solo-traveler, I would stay during the summer season at Hostel Dvor.
It has the overall best vibes, plus we really like the location.

Party Hostels in Split? Only in the season
You want party? You get party!
Split is known for its nightlife, and there are some fun party hostels in Split to stay at.
In fact, many backpackers in Split just come here for exactly that. The 3 top hostels we mentioned before are no party-places at all. So bare that in mind.
The two coolest party hostels in Split to guarantee a good time are:
- Split Hostel Booze & Snooze
- Split Hostel Fiesta Siesta – above a bar
Both hostels only open from April to October. The difference between both places?
No big difference really, both places party hard to Charlie’s bar.
Please remember, you can always go out for a party, just join a Pub Crawl. If you want a cool hostel, we recommend the ones mentioned above.
Split Hostel Booze & Snooze
Run by Australians, you can expect a couples of fun nights out during your stay.
During the season, every night Booze and Snooze takes out all hostel mates for dinner, so everybody gets to know each other. After that, the party starts off at Charlie’s bar.
Also worth to mention, the hostel is literally inside the Diocletian Palace.
Quite unusual!

Split Hostel Fiesta Siesta
Only open from April to October, Fiesta Siesta Hostel is well-known to “serve good vibes on tap!” and the best party hostel Split Croatia has to offer.
Central location, an on-site bar, no common rooms inside the hostel, and dorms-only. You will really get more siesta than fiesta here.

Except the Hostel Dvor, other Split hostels cater more to couples, groups and solo-travelers.

Hostels in Trogir (nearby town)
Just a short bus ride up North the coastline you find the beautiful, small village of Trogir.
We love this place; it’s a little gem.
If you have the time, we recommend staying one night here in Trogir too.
You can easily take a public bus to Trogir from Split. It is a small, medieval village with narrow streets, right at the sea front.
The answer to where to stay in Trogir is simple: Hostel Marina Trogir!
