Quick Introduction to Split
High-Season vs Off Season: Your experience will be completely different depending on when you come. Off-season runs from October or November to April or May, prices drop a long way, and hostels can be close to empty.
In high season, hostels here are quite pricey by European standards.
Summer prices, average price for a bed: Hostels in Split cost 25€ to 40€ per night for a bed in a dorm. A private room starts from 60€ up to 100€.
Winter prices, average price for a bed: Hostels in Split cost 7€ to 14€ per night for a bed in a dorm. A private room starts from 15€ up to 50€. This is a rough average just to give you an idea.
Prices always depend on season and holidays. Cheapest way to sanity-check a date: run Split through Hostelz, which pulls rates from the booking sites into one list, then book wherever it comes out cheapest. You can also check directly on Hostelworld.com or Booking.com.
Tourist tax: Croatia charges a nightly sojourn tax (boravišna pristojba) on every registered bed, and Split is one of the pricier municipalities for it. Budget somewhere between €1.20 and €2.00 per adult per night, higher from April to September and lower in winter. Under-12s are exempt and 12 to 18-year-olds pay half. It is usually not included in the price you see on a booking site, so expect it as an add-on at check-in. On a week in July that’s around €14 you didn’t plan for.
Currency: Croatia switched to the euro in 2023, so ignore any older guide quoting kuna. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, though a few small konobas and the ferry kiosks still prefer cash.
Hostel Quality: It may look like there are a lot of fantastic places, since there are design and boutique hostels here. However, we’d call the quality average rather than high. Zagreb has a noticeably better hostel standard.
Better to stick with our recommendations in this list to avoid disappointments.
Check-In and Check Out: The average check-in time is from 15:00 (3pm), while the Check Out time is before 11:00 (11am). Hostels usually offer luggage storage in case you arrive earlier or leave later. Make sure you check if luggage storage is free or if there is an extra cost.
Ferry to the Islands: In summer, taking ferries is straightforward. Always check with your hostel, they have the up-to-date schedules. In winter the ferries are very limited, so plan ahead to avoid disappointment. A good resource is croatiaferries.com.

Hostel Dvor is one of the few genuinely top-rated places to stay here, and for good reason.
The building alone is worth it: an old stone house with a modern interior. The atmosphere is easy-going, and because the dorms and common area are small, you end up talking to your roommates whether you planned to or not.
It is not a party hostel at all. But it is easy to meet people, which makes it a good base for heading into the centre for a drink and coming back to somewhere quiet.

Location: Of our three picks, this one has the longest walk into town, and it’s still only 10 minutes. There are shops, ATMs and restaurants around. It sits in Varoš, the oldest and best-known part of the city, and the neighbourhood itself is worth a wander.
The historic stone houses and narrow lanes are what Varoš is known for.
In short, you’re ten minutes from the Old Town crowds but you sleep somewhere quiet. That matters more than you’d think here, because a central hostel in Split can be genuinely loud thanks to the bars.

Gravitas Hostel is modern and streamlined, in the heart of Split with easy access to the city and the UNESCO-protected zone. It’s at ground level with a direct street entrance, which is more convenient than it sounds when you’re arriving with a pack. The local staff know their city and will help you sort out the practical stuff.
Markets, café bars, restaurants and everything else are around the corner. There are two large mixed dorms and a big common room for meeting people, plus clean, gender-divided bathrooms.
Be clear on one thing: there’s no kitchen. You do get a fridge, microwave, grill toaster and kettle, and there are plenty of markets and food shops nearby. Parking is in the paid city zones.

What you want is somewhere social, fun, clean and safe.
This is an honest guide, and we struggle a bit with a definite answer here. Why? Because all three hostels above are good for solo travellers.
And a lot depends on who else is staying. The hostel gives you the setup; the people make the week.

Split is known for its nightlife, and there are a couple of genuinely fun party hostels here.

Run by Australians, so expect a few big nights during your stay.
In season, Booze and Snooze takes the whole hostel out for dinner every night, so everyone gets to know each other. After that, it’s Charlie’s bar.
Also worth mentioning: the hostel is literally inside Diocletian’s Palace. A fourth-century Roman palace with a backpacker hostel in it is not a sentence you write often.

Split Hostel Fiesta Siesta
Open April to October only, Fiesta Siesta Hostel promises to “serve good vibes on tap”.
Here’s the honest shape of it: central location, an on-site bar, dorms only, and no common room inside the hostel. So the fiesta happens downstairs in the bar and the hostel upstairs is for the siesta. If you want the party in the building rather than a lounge to hang out in, this works. If you want somewhere to sit and meet people sober, it doesn’t.

Hostels in Trogir (nearby town)
A short bus ride up the coast is the small town of Trogir.
We love this place. It’s a proper stop rather than a detour.
If you have the time, spend a night here. The bus from Split is easy and public. Trogir is a small medieval town of narrow streets right on the seafront, and the whole centre is UNESCO-listed.

Kamena Lodge
Kamena Lodge sits in the foothills of the Mosor range and is the one to book if you want to be out of the city. Cosy, calm, and a genuine break from the summer crowds down on the Riva.
Every room has its own en-suite. Breakfast can be indoors or out, and there’s a pool.
There’s a fully equipped kitchen and both indoor and outdoor space for socialising. Regular BBQ and games nights, a book swap cabinet, a stack of DVDs and a TV.
The trade is obvious: you’re a bus ride from the nightlife. If that sounds like a problem, book somewhere central. If it sounds like the point, book this.
Location: About 20 minutes by bus from Split, with a view over the city and Diocletian’s Palace. Salona, the ancient Roman town and archaeological site, is 1.5 km away.

When to Visit Split
June and September are the sweet spot. Warm sea, long evenings, everything open, and prices that haven’t gone fully silly yet.
July and August are peak in every sense. Hot, packed, expensive, and the Riva is shoulder to shoulder. The nightlife is at its best and the ferries run constantly, so if that’s what you came for, come then and book early.
May and October are quieter and cheaper, and the sea is still swimmable in October. Bear in mind that a lot of hostels, including two of the three above, only open from May.
November to April is a different city entirely. Beds drop to a third of the summer price, but the ferry schedule thins right out, many hostels close completely, and Split becomes a normal Croatian town rather than a tourist destination. Which is lovely, and not what most people are here for.
How Many Days Do You Need in Split?
Two nights for the city itself. The Old Town and Diocletian’s Palace take a day, and Marjan Hill and Bačvice beach take another.
Three or four if you want day trips, and you should. Krka waterfalls, Klis Fortress, Trogir, or a boat out to the Blue Cave and Hvar.
Most people use Split as a base or a launchpad rather than a destination, which is the right instinct. Give it two nights, then get on a ferry.
Getting to Split and Around
From the airport: Split Airport is actually near Trogir, about 25 km out. Shuttle buses run to the main bus station next to the ferry port and take around 30 to 40 minutes. There’s also a cheaper local bus, and taxis if you land late.
Around town: walk. The Old Town is pedestrianised and compact, and everything in this guide except Kamena Lodge is within about 20 minutes on foot. Local buses cover the beaches further out.
The ferry port, the bus station and the train station are all in one spot, right next to the Old Town, which makes Split unusually easy to arrive in and leave from. Jadrolinija runs the island ferries, and in summer you should book ahead for Hvar.
Hostelgeeks Tip: If you’re island-hopping, check the ferry timetable before you book your hostel nights, not after. Off-season sailings can be once a day or less, and a lot of people lose a day in Split because they assumed there’d be an afternoon boat.
Is Split Safe?
Yes, very. Croatia is one of the safer countries in Europe and Split is a comfortable place to walk around at night, including for solo travellers.
The realistic risks are small. Pickpockets work the Riva and the Palace alleys in high summer, which is the only time the crowds are dense enough to make it worth their while. Bačvice gets messy late at night in season, in a drunk-holidaymaker way rather than a dangerous one.
Two things worth naming. First, the sea: people swim after drinking at Bačvice every summer and it goes wrong often enough to mention. Second, boat parties and island day trips sell a lot of drinks in strong sun, so pace yourself and take water.
Use the hostel lockers, keep your phone off the table at a Riva café, and you’ll be fine.

How much does a hostel in Split cost?
In summer, 25€ to 40€ per night for a dorm bed and 60€ to 100€ for a private room. In winter that drops to 7€ to 14€ for a dorm. Compare your dates on Hostelz, since the same bed is often priced differently across booking sites.
Is there a tourist tax in Split?
Yes. Croatia's nightly sojourn tax applies to every registered bed, and in Split it's roughly €1.20 to €2.00 per adult per night depending on season. It's usually added at check-in rather than included in the booking price.
What is the best area to stay in Split?
Inside or just outside Diocletian's Palace puts you in the middle of everything, though it can be loud. Varoš, the old stone quarter, is ten minutes away and much quieter.

Two nights for the city, three or four if you want day trips to Krka, Klis or Trogir. Most people use Split as a launchpad for the islands rather than a destination.
When is the best time to visit Split?
June and September give you warm sea and long evenings without full peak prices. July and August are the busiest and most expensive, and the best for nightlife.
How do I get from Split airport to the city?
Shuttle buses run from the airport, which is near Trogir about 25 km out, straight to the main bus station beside the ferry port. It takes 30 to 40 minutes.
How do I get from Split to Hvar?
Catamarans and car ferries run from Split's port, right next to the Old Town, and take between one and two hours. Book ahead in summer, and check the schedule carefully off-season when sailings are scarce.
Flights to Split?
Split has its own small airport, which is actually near the town of Trogir.
There are shuttle buses straight to the Split city centre, so getting in is easy.
Other airports with cheap connections are Zadar and Dubrovnik. It may be worth flying into one of those to start your Croatia trip.
