Despite its small size, the city has several exceptional hostels. With so many hostels to choose from, HostelGeeks has narrowed down the three best hostels in Mostar to ensure you an unforgettable trip!

Your Shortcut:

  1. Hostel Miran - best for Backpackers
  2. Hostel Majdas - best for Female Travellers

Bosnia and Herzegovina was historically divided into two parts. The northern region of the country is named ‘Bosnia’, while the southern region is called ‘Herzegovina’. Both are ethnically distinct regions previously populated by Bosniaks, Serbs, and Croats. Following the disintegration of Yugoslavia in 1992, Bosnia and Herzegovina finally gained its independence.

Mostar has a long history that dates back to the Bosnian War of 1992-1995. The Mostar Bridge, destroyed by Croats in 1993, is now a Balkan icon and one of the most-visited landmarks in the nation. The War Photos Exhibition in the Old Town will give you a great understanding of the tragedies and consequences of the war.

This guide is perfect for YOU, when you…

  • are tired of crappy hostels!
  • want a social Hostel to actually meet people
  • are happy to spend $1 to $2 more for a much better experience

It is possible to visit Mostar in a single day, with many travelers visiting from Dubrovnik as a day trip. The city’s main attractions, the Old Town and Mostar Bridge are a short walk from nearly all nearby accommodations, where you’ll pass an abundance of markets, bazaars, mosques, and buzzing cafes and restaurants to keep you entertained for the duration of your trip. The majority of day tours last no more than six hours. Most tours outside of Mostar, which are available at almost all hostels and travel agencies, will include the Kravica Waterfall and the Pocitelj Castle. If you still have time on your hands, take a fifteen-minute bus ride to Blagaj to see the famous Blagaj Dervish House, a cliff-enclosed monastery sitting upon a pristine, clear spring.

Check our best hostels in Dubrovnik guide.

Booking these tours through your hostel is recommended because you’ll get a more firsthand experience, with each local tour guide having his or her connection to the war, allowing you to see the sites through their perspectives. In addition, you will almost certainly receive a discount as opposed to major tour agencies in the city center, which are frequently overrun with large flocks of tourists. Outside of Mostar, there is much natural beauty that distinguishes it from other geographical locations.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a truly one-of-a-kind destination, with its peaceful coexistence of Muslim, Christian, and Orthodox religions embodied in the nation’s Ottoman architecture, diverse cuisine, and shifting history. Travelers will enjoy exploring Mostar and the rest of the country, especially given the hospitality and friendliness of Bosnians eager to show guests their land.

While many countries in the Balkans are more popular in the summer for the near-flawless beaches and sunny weather, venturing inland will lead you to beautiful discoveries of more historically significant aspects of Balkan heritage. Furthermore, the country is easy to visit all year, making it an excellent travel destination regardless of the season. Many hostels are open year-round, and Mostar’s main attractions are not affected by the weather.

1. Hostel Miran

Hostel Miran , a cozy, family-run hostel in Mostar, is a backpacker favorite.

This well-reviewed hostel is only a five-minute walk from the bus stop (meaning you won’t have to drag your luggage through the crowded, cobblestoned center) and a ten-minute walk to Mostar’s Old Town and the Mostar Bridge, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. The two 4-bed dormitories and two private doubles are always spotlessly polished, promising guests a cleanly and comfortable stay. Cooking your meals in the hostel kitchen is a quick convenience thanks to the dozens of nearby supermarkets and shops. And, if your travels leave you too tired to cook, there are many smaller, Bosnian-owned eateries nearby that are less expensive than restaurants in the Old Town.

Though Hostel Miran is not a party hostel, guests are welcome to join together on the open-air, outdoor patio for beers and conversation, with the majority of guests being more mature than the average youth hostel. The owners also offer personalized tours of the area’s must-see attractions, such as the Kravica Waterfall and other nearby landmarks. Breakfast is available for only two euros per person and is quickly prepared by the hostel owners. Free WiFi access is available in the entire hostel.

Miran Hostel has everything a solo traveler needs for a lively and well-planned stay in Mostar.

Hostel Majdas is rated as one of the best backpacker hostels in Mostar, especially for female solo travelers.

This vibrant, tapestry-filled hostel has a spacious indoor communal room as well as a lovely green outdoor patio where guests can easily socialize. Many guests praise the hostel’s beds, which are (lucky for you!) not bunkbeds, allowing all guests in the 4-bed mixed dormitory to avoid top bunk misadventures and the creaky noises that come with it.

The two private double rooms are ideal for tired travelers seeking a quiet few nights of relaxation.

The hostel takes pride in its homey, tranquil atmosphere, where the absence of binge drinking and late-night noise guarantees all guests a good night’s sleep without interruptions. Hostel Majdas is also located in the city center, only five minutes from the bus stop and eight minutes to the Old Town and Mostar Bridge. Like many other hostels in the area, Hostel Majdas organizes tours throughout the Hercegovina province.

Majda, the hostel’s doting owner, goes out of her way to make every visitor feel like a member of the family, serving a delicious (and complimentary) free breakfast every morning.

Hostel Majdas will quickly become your Bosnian home away from home.

Location This hostel is located in the historical city of Mostar with Old Bridge Mostar reachable within 5 minutes. The property is just another 5 minutes from the Muslibegovic House, 10 minutes from Mepas Mall and Kujundziluk – Old Bazaar. Seriously, you are in the center. The indoor communal space is reminiscent of a nice countryside living room, whereas the outdoor patio has plenty of comfortable couches, soothing hammocks, and tables for dining sprinkled among the refreshing garnish of flowers and plants.

The two dormitories have only 4-6 beds, giving visitors a pleasant slumber without the disturbances of loud snoring and bag shuffling from other guests. Couples also favor this one-of-a-kind hostel in Mostar, with the sensual decor in the two private rooms resembling more of a hotel rather than a hostel. Hostel Musala is an excellent choice for visitors looking to peacefully unwind.

Flights to Mostar?

Mostar have an airport and its name is Mostar International Airport. But – there is a very little flights to this airport. So basically, you will not get to Mostar by plane. You can fly to Sarajevo (130 kilometres by bus) or Dubrovnik (131 kilometres) or even Split (169 kilometres away), and then you can travel to Mostar by bus, or even by the train from Sarajevo.

This is how basically all travelers do it. keep it in mind, Bosnia and herzegovina does not belong to the European Union or Schengen. Meaning, you will need your valid passport to travel here. We have also met people doing day trips from Dubrovnik to Mostar. Personally, we do not think a day trip only is worth it the hussle and the time you spend in the bus. It is better to spend one or two nights here, and then continue to Sarajevo or Dubrovnik from here.
