    • Visit Tikal

One of the most important things to do during your trip to Flores is to visit Tikal. The rich culture and the presence of ancient Mayan infrastructure are something that you shouldn’t miss seeing. The site is mostly famous for its five temples, one of which reaches 65m in height and is thought to be the tallest temple the Maya people built.

Tours to Tikal from Flores are run daily; however, not all are available in English. Don’t hesitate to pay a few more pounds to get an English-speaking guide and learn about the cultural heritage of this region.

    • Explore the waterfront markets

Every afternoon, you can wander the markets on the Malecon in Flores and explore the tasty food and handmade crafts. Here you can find some of Guatemala’s most popular dishes and delicious sweets and cakes that will certainly make your sweet tooth content.

    • Shop for souvenirs

Flores is undoubtedly the best place in Guatemala to go souvenir shopping. The narrow streets are packed with arts and crafts shops, where you can find various local goods. The most popular thing you can buy here is handwoven fabrics, which are made using a thousand-year-old technique.

    • Go kayaking

The breathtaking views from Lago Peten Itza are something worth seeing, and you can do that by renting a kayak. Many accommodations even offer a kayak rental service for free, so you can make the most out of your trip to Flores.

    • Visit Santa Barbara Museum

This tiny museum, which is situated on an islet west of Flores, houses a few Maya items from surrounding archaeological sites, as well as some vintage broadcasting equipment. In order to arrange your visit, you’ll have to get in touch with the museum, so they will pick you up at the dock.

Located on the shores of Lake Peten Itza, Hotel Petén Express offers budget accommodation with the capacity to host up to 32 guests. All five shared rooms are equipped with air conditioning and a private bathroom with basic amenities. The hostel features a nice and spacious terrace, a shared lounge area, as well as a restaurant and bar.

One thing that makes this accommodation option unique is the jacuzzi and the two pools available for use. This is a great way to unwind after a long day spent outside, exploring the beauty of Flores, although it is frequently mentioned that there’s no social atmosphere.

Although the guests give this hostel a high grade for the quality breakfast it provides, as well as the helpfulness of the staff, there are certain things they seem to dislike. For example, one guest stated in a review that the dorm room they resided in didn’t have windows, which makes it hard to ventilate. Another review said that the rooms are not spacious overall (they find it hard to fit their backpack there) and that the hosts don’t provide you with a key. The guests suspect this is a trick to make people pay the fee for having a personal locker within the room, since you’re forced to sleep with unlocked doors.

Location: This hostel is located within the Isla de Flores on the shores of Lake Petén Itzá.
