1. About Worldpackers

How do you like the sound of exploring more than 140 countries around the world, volunteering as you go?

Well luckily for you, the site is an online volunteering platform that has made this entirely possible. You just need to do some work for travel.

“Safely travel as a volunteer, have life-changing experiences, and make a positive impact on the world.”

Worldpackers is a travel community that helps connect travelers – looking to exchange their skills for accommodation – with incredible verified hosts around the world that offer endless experiences, from permaculture projects to working in a school – the possibilities are endless.

You won’t get paid, but you will get accommodation, new skills, and unforgettable memories.

Simply put: You volunteer your time for a set amount of hours per day/week in exchange for free accommodation and the opportunity to learn new skills, meet people and travel cheaply. Backpackers work exchange in motion.

It’s a true online community, incorporating world voluntourism with money-making opportunities and an academy with hundreds of useful lessons… whew!

That’s Worldpackers in a nutshell. Keep reading as I dive in and talk about WP in more depth.

Here is one more epic video by blogger Sabrina from GirlvsGlobe about Worldpackers UK. She stayed in the Highlands in the UK for free in exchange for her work. Take a look at the video below.

2. Worldpackers Annual Membership

Worldpackers offer a 12 month membership, with three different plans on offer (plan, pack, and plus) depending on what kind of traveller you are and the benefits you’d like to enjoy.

Here you have a brief overlook at the different plans so you have an idea of which one is suited to you:

Solo Trip Plan (US$59/year)

Obviously, this is designed for the single traveller. It allows you to get in touch with any host and confirm as many trips as you want in the 12 month period.

It includes:

  • Safeward: you get up to US$59 refunded for emergency accommodation if the experience with the host does not go as agreed.
  • Host Respond guarantee: they’ll refund your membership if you don’t get any answer from the hosts withing the first 30 days of your plan.
  • 24/7 support: an expert team offering support 7 days/ week.
  • Access to the community blog

Here you can find more details on how to use Worldpackers vs Workaway.

Couples/Friends Trip Plan (US$69/year)

For an extra US$10 you’re able to volunteer along with your partner or friend. This plan is strictly for two people that plan on volunteering together.

Good to know: Both travellers create separate profiles. You can invite and connect your accounts to apply for volunteer opportunities that accept friends or couples.

It includes the same benefits as the Solo Trip plan.

Solo PACK Plan (US$109/ year) & Couples/Friends PACK (US$129/year)

This is a ‘premium’ pack and offers more benefits. Once again, it includes everything mentioned in the Solo Trip or Couples/Friends Trip, with added extras including:

  • Extended Safeward: up to US$199 refunded for emergency accommodation if the experience with the host does not go as agreed.
  • Priority support: fast assistance 7 days/ week.
  • Access to +210 lessons on “planning & budgeting for travel”
  • Access to +440 lessons on “making a living while travelling as a lifestyle”

Solo Pack PLUS (US$139/ year) & Couples Pack PLUS (US$159/ year)

This is the premium plus pack and offers the most benefits. The difference with the pack plan is the extended Safeward. You get up to US$399 refunded for emergency accommodation if the experience with the host does not go as agreed.

3. Real Talk: My Personal Worldpackers Experience

My first Worldpackers experience was years ago, but I still think about it often. I stayed at a hostel in a small town and helped with basic cleaning and guest experience in exchange for a bed in dorm (where only volunteers slept) and breakfast. It wasn’t fancy, but it gave me exactly what I was looking for at the time: connection, purpose, and a slower way to travel.

Not every day was perfect—some things weren’t as advertised and expectations had to be cleared up with the host—but even that taught me how to communicate better and advocate for myself. That’s the part most people don’t talk about enough: the learning curve.

If you’re scared to try it, I get it. I thought the same: “This sounds too good to be true.” But once you take the first step, you realize it’s just a new way of experiencing the world. Do your research. Read reviews. And in case of doubt: Message past volunteers!

Go in with open eyes, not rose-tinted glasses. It’s not a luxury trip—it’s real and raw.

My advice? Choose hosts that offer fair hours (think 4–5 hours/day, max 5 days/week), clarify the food situation early, and don’t be afraid to ask about mobile signal, room setup, or expectations. If a listing feels vague or too demanding, just skip it.

Volunteering is not always comfortable—but it is empowering. It teaches you things about yourself that no guided tour ever could.

And when it works, it’s one of the most affordable, enriching ways to travel long-term.

4. Why Choose Worldpackers?

Ooph, good question! And honestly, it has been difficult to make this section concise because there are so many benefits to choosing Worldpackers over any other leading volunteer site.

To give you a really good overview, below I’ve listed some of the main reasons to volunteer with Worldpackers.

Helpful: The team over at Hostelz.com have written a big guide on how to Volunteer and Travel the World, comparing Worldpackers, Workaway and WWOOF – three leading online volunteer platforms.

1. WP Safeguard

If things don’t go to plan with your host, you can get refunded for emergency accommodation. That kind of peace of mind is priceless when you’re far from home.

Looking for general travel insurance? Here’s our:

2. Host Response Guarantee

3. Highly Responsive Support

You’re not left hanging. They offer human support available 7 days a week and has a 93% satisfaction rate. Real people, real help.

4. Give Back

A portion of your membership goes to support social and ecological impact projects chosen by the community. It’s volunteering, powered by collective action.

5. EXTRA: Worldpackers Academy

When paying for the upgraded plans, you’ll get access to over 600 lessons covering finance, planning, languages and earning money while travelling.

7. Programs

How does it work?

  4. Sign up for programs that inspire you…
  5. Produce content for Worldpackers website or socials (specifications about it are on their website)

5. How does it work?

I was pleasantly surprised just how simple and straightforward it is to use Worldpackers. With a few clicks of a button you’ll be ready to start applying to incredible hosts around the world.

Once you create your profile, you can search for volunteer positions by location, skills, host type, or even keywords.

You’ll see all the details on the host’s profile:

  • how many hours they expect (most hosts ask for around 20–25 hours per week, but it can vary depending on the project. I heard farms and surf camps expect closer to 30-32 hours per week),
  • what you get in return,
  • how long they usually take to respond, and
  • what other volunteers had to say.

Some hosts offer way more than just a bed—think free meals, laundry, bikes, even attraction tickets or tours. That said, there are also some hosts who do ask for a small extra fee, (usually as a security deposit).

Just make sure to read the fine print and don’t assume everything is included.

When you find a host you like, you can apply directly through their profile. You can also ask them any questions you might have.

I recommend asking something upfront just to get a feel for how they communicate and how responsive they are. A good question might be asking about mobile signal or Wi-Fi. If you’re need to stay connected, this matters more than you think—especially in rural places.

If you’re unsure, you can also reach out to previous volunteers directly on the platform. It’s a great way to ask real questions and get a feel for the experience.

In case you send out five or more applications and don’t hear back from anyone within the first month, Worldpackers will actually refund your membership fee—which is a solid safety net.

Once your trip is done, you’ll be invited to leave a review. Please do it. And be honest. Reviews are gold in this space—don’t let a host pressure you into sugarcoating things. Your experience might help someone else avoid a bad match (or find the perfect one).

And remember! If things go sideways and your host doesn’t follow through on the deal, you can contact Worldpackers 24/7. If you want to leave because the deal is not as advertised you can ask for the WP Safeguard benefit to get help relocating and even get your emergency accommodation covered.

So, let’s keep it simple and show you how Worldpackers works:

  1. Browse endless volunteering opportunities
  2. Become a member – don’t forget to apply your $10 Worldpackers promo code!
  3. Complete profile
  4. Look and apply for volunteer positions – apply early for better chances
  5. Message hosts of interest – ask honest questions, and always read the host reviews before saying yes
  6. Make sure you have a win-win agreement with your host
  7. Pack your bags!

Erm yep, it’s that easy!

6. Volunteering Opportunities

When it comes to volunteering abroad with Worldpackers, the opportunities are quite literally endless.

The whole point of this platform is to offer the greatest collection of opportunities across the world to satisfy every type of traveller no matter where you’re from, your age or your interests. That’s a big hole to fill and yet, WP has done it!

What kind of volunteer positions are there?

There are all kinds of volunteer positions on Worldpackers, but here are some of the most popular ones:

  • Joining an NGO or social projects — tasks like gardening, construction, painting, or community work
  • Working on farms and permaculture projects
  • Help in a hostel or Homestay — cleaning, reception, guest entertainment, marketing, and more
  • Assisting at schools — from teaching languages to helping with sports (and no, you don’t always need to be a native English speaker!)
  • Childcare
  • Volunteering at surf camps
  • Marketing : content writer / creator

These experiences are usually designed to match your skills and interests, so you can find something that feels right for your style of travel.

So many of these projects and placements could be used as a way of gaining experience and skills that will lead to paid work in the future.

With opportunities in over 140 countries worldwide, it’s possible to travel to every corner of the world. Some of the most popular destination include United States, Portugal, Thailand, Mexico and Brazil.

7. Is Worldpackers Safe?

Absolutely! Worldpackers is a registered community that goes to great lengths to ensure hosts are legit and travellers are kept safe. Their +7 years of experience in the industry is to be trusted.

They do this in numerous ways, such as:

  1. Offering Worldpackers Safeguard (more here)
  2. Reviews = community safety, collaboration & learning
  3. Verifying hosts before they join the community
  4. Creating formal agreements between host & traveller
  5. Providing support in English, Spanish & Portuguese

All of the above are enough to settle anyone’s anxiety, whether you’re brand new world backpackers or a 5 year world nomad.

At the end of the day, if you’re considering signing up to a dedicated volunteering platform, you want excellent safety measures in place. Worldpackers has done a fantastic job in this arena.

Their commitment to quality and safety means the team are constantly listening out for reports that compromise moral, physical and/or psychological integrity of travellers and hosts. They go as far as deactivating profiles to ensure the community is kept safe at all times.

9. Tips for using Worldpackers

1. Check reviews

Only travellers that have physically spent time with a host can leave a review on their profile. Read them! They will give you a clearer picture of what to expect and alert you of any possible negatives. This can save you a lot of time and hassle.

Good to know: reviews are double-sided (host and traveler). When reading them you can read both sides and understand if it was a good volunteer match or not.

2. Create an epic profile

Putting time and effort into your profile is really worthwhile. At the end of the day, alongside your email application, your profile is the first impression any host will have of you. Make it count! Add fun photos that represent your personality, too.

3. Send a personalised email

Even though you have a profile outlining who you are, it’s also a great idea to send a personalised email to your future host. It’s obvious when someone is sending a copy & paste template – avoid this and make it clear that you’re really interested in their project by personalising your email around them.

4. Apply in advance

It’s all too easy to miss out on an epic volunteering opportunity by applying too late. I recommend applying as early as 1-2 months in advance, or at least making contact to enquire about their busy periods and when is best to make an application.

5. Commit for longer

In our experience volunteering around the world, staying at one place for longer is often better. Longer commitments equal more chance to settle in, make long-lasting friendships and get more deeply involved with the project. A commitment of at least 3 weeks is our recommendation.

6. Keep your options open

Consider applying to several different hosts at one time to increase your chances of being offered a position. Remember that it is ok to turn down a host, just as they have the opportunity to turn you down. As long as you apply in advance and communicate effectively, there’s nothing wrong in applying for overlapping projects so that you don’t miss out.

10. Questions about Worldpackers

We’ve received a lot of questions from our readers over the years, especially from people considering volunteering for the first time. If you’re still on the fence, here are some answers that might help you decide.

What Are the Typical Requirements to join Worldpackers?

You don’t need any specific qualifications to join Worldpackers. Many positions are beginner-friendly, and you can filter by skill level.
However, some hosts may ask for specific experience (like photography, childcare, or bartending), so just read each listing carefully.
You’ll also need to meet visa requirements for the country you’re visiting—Worldpackers doesn’t handle visas, so make sure to research this in advance.

Who Can Join Worldpackers?

Anyone over 18 can join Worldpackers.

Are there age limits in Worldpackers?

There’s no upper age limit—if you’re healthy and excited to help, you’re welcome.
Some hosts might have specific age preferences, which they usually list in their profile.

Can I Travel as a Family or with Kids?

Worldpackers is designed for solo travelers or pairs. Volunteering with children is generally not supported, but you can contact individual hosts to ask—they may occasionally make exceptions.

What Happens If a Host Cancels Last Minute?

It’s rare, but it can happen. Worldpackers offers a “Safeward” program: if the host backs out or the experience isn’t what was agreed, they’ll help you find a new host and may cover up to a few nights of emergency accommodation, depending on your plan.

Can I do this if I don’t speak the local language?

Yes. Most hosts speak some English, and the platform is designed for international travelers. But in rural areas, it’s smart to learn a few basic phrases or use a translation app just in case.

Do Volunteers Get Paid?

You don’t get paid for Worldpackers gigs—it’s a skill-for-stay exchange. Some hosts offer perks like meals, tour tickets, or tips for paid gigs in the area.

Do I need a degree or previous experience to join Worldpcakers?

You don’t need a degree or experience—just show up willing to help.

Do I need a Visa?

Maybe. And Worldpackers does NOT arrange visas for you. Always check the entry and visa rules for the country you’re visiting. In most cases, a tourist visa is enough, but it depends on your nationality and the country’s laws.

Can I make money through Worldpackers?

You don’t get paid for volunteering—it’s a work exchange. However, some hosts offer tips, and once you’ve completed a few trips, you can apply for Worldpackers programs that include content creation or referral bonuses.

What kind of hours are expected?

Most hosts expect around 20–25 hours per week, usually spread over 4–5 days. Some placements (especially farms or surf camps) might require up to 30–32 hours—just check the listing before you apply.

Can I use Worldpackers if I’m over 30? 40? 60?

Yes! There’s no upper age limit. As long as you’re healthy, willing to help, and able to meet the host’s expectations, you’re welcome. Some hosts even prefer mature travelers.
That said, some opportunities might not appeal to everyone. For example, party hostels or super social backpacker environments might feel more geared toward younger crowds. In those cases, it might be you deciding the vibe isn’t right—not the platform or the host. The beauty of Worldpackers is that you can filter and choose based on what suits your style and comfort.

Can I choose where I sleep?

It depends on the host. Some offer shared dorms, some private rooms, and some very basic setups. Always check the photos and read reviews—this will give you a better idea of what to expect.

Is Worldpackers safe for solo female travelers?

Yes—but like anything, it depends on doing your research. Read reviews, message past volunteers, ask your host questions, and trust your gut. Worldpackers also verifies all hosts and has a support team available 24/7 in case something feels off.

11. Extra: Worldpackers vs Workaway

Travelling doesn’t need to be that expensive. Thanks to work exchange websites like Worldpackers, it is now made possible. With their help, travellers work away from home in exchange of accommodation. It also allows you to add some skills and find friendship that will last forever.

Worldpackers and Workaway help connect hosts and potential volunteers looking for a work exchange placement. We can say that it is the simplest way to find work exchanges, so let’s find out the difference between the two and how Wordpackers is the best.

Workaway is so popular, so no wonder a lot of travelers have their best Workaway experiences. There are over 50,000 opportunities in more than 170 countries worldwide. It has a wide selection of hosts. It is also good to be honest but we do not have a Workaway promo code for now.

Worldpackers, on the other hand, caters to new travelers. It is perfect for new travelers because they are more involved in helping you with finding a host. It still offers 5,000+ positions in 140 countries. One cool thing about Worldpackers is that they verify their hosts, so you are in safe hands. Go ahead and start sending out your applications.

11. Final words about Worldpackers

In my humble opinion, Worldpackers offers a fantastic opportunity to travel around the world by volunteering.

This platform has obviously been designed by travellers, and the consistently good service and safety measures ensure you’re kept safe and happy while you travel.

I particularly enjoy the added perks such as the Safeward and access to the academy. All in all, you’ll be set up with everything you need before, during and after your experiences with Worldpackers.

I hope that you find incredible hosts from Worldpackers Portugal, Worldpackers Italia, Worldpackers France, Worldpackers Japan and other parts of the world. It is time to same some time off work to travel! Explore more travel opportunities in the backpackers world.
