Things to Bring & Pack
There are a few things backpackers should be sure to bring when staying at a party hostel specifically. These items include earplugs (for early mornings and loud roomates), a padlock (lock up your valuables BEFORE going out), headache medicine (always usefful!), and condoms.
Especially for the bigger European cities where pickpocketing is common we recommend wearing trousers with zippers. This limits the chances of stealing from your pockets.

Our Insider Tips
As mentioned in the beginning, this guide is an extension of our article “best hostels in Vienna”.
Yet, we have written down more of our best tips for Vienna.
Vienna is best described as a large village. The capital has only two million people, but the city is very spread out, so while walking from point A to point B is possible, it is preferable to take the tram, especially at night
Vienna has no “official” nightlife district, so you’ll find cool bars and clubs scattered throughout the city regardless of neighborhood, making nighttime exploration even more enjoyable!
An introduction to Vienna’s drinking scene can begin in the first district’s Old Jewish Quarter, where several typical city center bars serve as a meeting place for newbie travelers and locals to mingle.
The longer you stay in Vienna, the more you’ll realize that all of the cool, local pubs are hidden away in secluded and narrow corners, where you’ll find the most interesting and party-going locals to explore the city with.
Fitzcarraldo, one of the city’s most noteworthy speakeasies, is hidden behind a vending machine on Neubaugasse 38 Street and only accepts small groups at a time.
After exploring the city’s many dive bars and pubs, make your way to Vienna’s most famous nightclubs, including Flex, Prater Dome, Titanic, and Elektro Gönner. Dress to impress and prepare to spend money because these clubs don’t close until after dawn.
Visitors frequently and unknowingly skip Prater, a public amusement park and home of the Giant Ferris Wheel. When the weather permits, the park, which is located northeast of the city center and about twenty minutes by tram, is also an enjoyable year-round place to drink and hang out.
The LGBTQ+ scene is not lacking in terms of inclusion and nightlife. In Vienna’s 5th and 6th districts, there are numerous LGBTQ-friendly bars and nightclubs.
Felixx Bar is a great place to hang out on the weekends, and the annual Rainbow Ball hosted at the Park Hotel is the city’s largest, gay-friendly gathering for those in the community.
Das DonauTechno, which caters to techno music fans, and Tanzcafe Jenseits, a firey red brothel-turned-bar that offers all-night drinking after other bars close, are two other inclusive and unique bars in Vienna.
Marillenschnaps (shortened to schnapps), Austria’s most popular alcoholic beverage, is an apricot-infused brandy that is typically taken as a shot and slowly drank after meals.
Vienna is also home to many breweries, so if you want to start drinking during the day, check out Ottakringer Brewery and 1516 Brewing Company in Vienna.
