What to Drink in Tallinn
The cold weather in Estonia will make any local or traveler seek refuge in the nearest bar. While drinking your way through Estonia, here are some popular alcoholic beverages to get you started.
- Vodka: Of course. Vodka, whether in shot form or with a nice mixer, or even in your morning coffee, is inexpensive and widely available in Estonia.
- Glogg (Mulled Wine): During the winter months, glogg can be found everywhere. It is essentially heated red wine with spices like cinnamon and orange peel added.
- Mead: Mead is a fermented honey-based alcoholic beverage that is typically consumed on holidays and special occasions.
- Saku: Estoniaβs largest brewery, Saku beer is ideal for a cheap pregame.
Tallinn Nightlife Safety Tips
Like all destinations, travelers in Tallinn should practice common sense and prioritize their personal safety. Here are some tips and tricks to help you have a fun and safe night in Tallinn.
- Always walk in groups: Drinking with others is certainly more fun than drinking alone. Though Tallinn has relatively low crime, solo travelers and women, especially, should stick to walking in a group at night to avoid unwanted attention.
- Keep your personal belongings secure: Pickpockets happen in crowded places, such as bars and clubs. While drinking, keep your wallet and identification in a secure, preferably smaller bag. Never leave any important items in your jacket at the clubβs coat check.
- Donβt drink on the streets: Though it may be tempting to crack open a beer under a famous monument, and you may see young locals doing it, drinking on the streets as a tourist can make you a target for easy fines by the local police.
- Use ridesharing apps: Tallinn is a walkable city, and tourists typically stick near the Old Town. However, if you find yourself far from your hostel, Uber and Bolt are the main ridesharing apps in Tallinn.

Things to Bring & Pack
There are a few things backpackers should be sure to bring when staying at a party hostel specifically. These items include earplugs (for early mornings and loud roomates), a padlock (lock up your valuables BEFORE going out), headache medicine (always usefful!), and condoms.
Especially for the bigger European cities where pickpocketing is common we recommend wearing trousers with zippers. This limits the chances of stealing from your pockets.
