6 Cool Party Hostels in Budapest – Ruin Bars, SPARTY, and Festivals

Coolest Party Hostels in Budapest

Budapest is famous for its vibrant nightlife, which includes festivals, ruin bars, and boat parties. Of course, you already know this.

And oh boy, it is so worth it, seriously. To make your stay more memorable, it is crucial to stay in a hostel that will help you experience the best of Budapest. If you want to party in Budapest, you NEED a Party Hostel in Budapest. Very simple! If partying is your goal and you end up staying in a calm hostel, chances are you will not enjoy your stay.

That’s why I put together this guide to the top party hostels in Budapest. I visited Budapest for the first time in February 2008. The rural bars were not as numerous as today. Back then a hostel cost me $4. I spent an epic weekend with a classmate from university.

On my last trip in June 2022, I visited together with Anna a total of 8 hostels; from cheap to party and luxury.

These are fun, cheap, and sociable places to stay. Keep reading to learn about the best party-friendly hostels in this exciting metropolis.

We are sharing you the best stuff you need to know before you head out partying. Further below you will find our map we have created for you. It’ll help you planning better.

Quick Introduction to Budapest

Average price for a bed: The hostel rates will vary depending on location, amenities, and time of year. On average, the price of a hostel in Budapest is $7 to $40 per night.

Prices always depend on season and holidays. Please always check the exact rates on Hostelz.com, Hostelworld.com or Booking.com.

Hostel Location: Be sure to research the location of hostels compared to major attractions and areas in the city. Budapest is full of pub crawls, sparty, boat parties, festivals, ruin bars, rooftop bars and other venues open all through the night. We talk about party and nightlife in Budapest here. Check our map with all hostels here.

What district is the nightlife in Budapest? The Party District, headquartered in the VI. district and famous Király Street. It is the busiest nightlife district in the city. Here you can find as well the world-famous Szimpla Kert.

The Coolest Nightlife in Budapest...

Tourism Tax: Only Budapest has tourism tax in Hungary. Every night, travellers must pay 4% more for their accommodation. This tax is usually not included in the price and can differ slightly depending on the district of Budapest.

Sziget festival: When planning to visit the well-known Sziget festival, make sure you make your booking as early as possible. The city is packed at that time!

Safety: Budapest is a relatively safe city. As with many other European cities, pick-pocketing is a pretty common crime, but “fortunately” is usually geared more towards electronics and valuable items. When it comes to assault or physical abuse, this isn’t very common at all. Keep in mind, when traveling, it is important to be smart; trust your gut, be aware of your surroundings and if something seems off, it probably is.

Budget tip: We have a dedicated Budapest travel budget guide.

6. Maverick City Lodge (not a part hostel, but…)

Our #6 is NOT a Party Hostel!!! But, hear us out.

All places we have shared on this list are hostels to actually party inside the hostel, too. Maverick City Lodge is not a party hostel at all,  BUT it is perfectly located within the coolest district to party and enjoy the nightlife.

Note: No worries, you can still sleep at night. Windows are well isolated – we have stayed here over a weekend, and tested this in person.

So, why do we then talk about this hostel?

Maverick City Lodge is the best hostel in town to enjoy the party outside the hostel, and then come back to a cool, clean hostel! Have a drink and enjoy a good night sleep!!! It is perfect for female solo-travelers looking for a safe place to stay and enjoy going out at night. The famous Szimpla Kert is just a 3 minutes walk from here. Budapest Nightlife: What You Need To Know

Budapest is a culturally rich European city. Art, dance, and music are distinct. From exhibit halls to thermal baths, there’s plenty for everyone to do and see.

Budapest is cheaper than Paris, and we love its activities. So here’s a list of what we think are the top things to do in Budapest at night.

Check out our picks for the greatest venues in Budapest, all of which are ready to make you happy throughout your nightlife experience.

Ruin Pubs

What better way to spend an evening than exploring Budapest’s oldest and most beloved area? The Ruin Pub area is packed with ‘Pubs in Ruins,’ but it’s so much more!

The older, protected buildings offer charm and distinctiveness. Travelers and young people go to Budapest’s party district to drink, party, and shop for vintage clothing, boutique hotels, and weekend farmer’s markets.

The primary party area is tiny and consisting of popular local pubs, but feel free to explore beyond – you may unearth the next Budapest hot spot.

Ruin Bars in Budapest? It is still a thing and still amazing!! The Coolest Nightlife in Budapest... A Piano in a ruin bar? Yes, please!!

360 Bar

There’s no better place for lip-smacking cocktails and a magnificent vista to distract you from your company. This rooftop bar has 360-degree views of the city, a long wine and drink selection, and delicious small meals.

Reserve a table for sunset cocktails or check out their summer events, which include ‘Yoga Brunch’ and day parties.

Racskert

Former parking lot turned graffiti-covered ruin pub with a festival feel. Racskert is a local hangout in Budapest known for its affordable beer, plant-based food, courtyard filled with garden, and live folk music.

This place has a very good vibe that will turn the energy of the crowd to the next level. We encourage you to see it for yourself.

Fogas Ház

This ruin bar pioneer has something for everyone. This maze-like facility is wonderful to get lost in. Fogas Ház is a bar/cultural centre featuring an outdoor dance floor, thrift store, cocktail bar with a patio, ping-pong area, and pizza.

You’ll never get bored in this place. Better be ready to have fun and meet new friends.

Sunrise from Buda Castle

One of the most famous places to visit is Buda Castle. It is beautiful! The castle itself is worth the visit, but the actual highlight is apparently the view. You have an amazing view over almost the entire city. And guess what: Sunrise is even better.

We went there to see it. Magical, indeed. We even saw an influencer couple taking their insta shots with a professional photographer.

But that’s not all.

The majority of people there came straight from the pub, bar or club. 3 German girls celebrated the sunrise with a fresh, cold beer. Another big group of like ±20 people also came straight from the club to finish what looked like one of the best nights of their life.

Therefore, keep this in mind. This is a thing!

No joke: This group came straight from the club to watch the sunrise from Buda Castle. YOLO!! Sunrise from Buda Castle - these 3 German girls did the hard work of partying all night and watch the sunrise with a fresh, cold beer - well done!! Let's party all night and watch the sunrise from Buda Castle - this a thing!

Places to Explore in Budapest

Yeah, we understand that they are known to have an amazing nightlife, but this place has a very rich culture. Well, it will be a shame if you didn’t see the historical places in Budapest. Your trip will be extra for sure! Here we have shared some of the most visited places in Budapest.

Széchenyi Thermal Bath

Szechenyi Baths is Budapest’s most popular attraction: soothing, fun, inexpensive, and romantic at night. In addition to the 18 natural hot spring pools, there are 10 saunas/steam cabins, massage therapies, facial treatments, and more.

Szechenyi Spa Baths is located in Budapest’s City Park, among several attractions. The Neo-baroque palace was built for Szechenyi Baths as Hungary has been the country of baths and Budapest the City of Baths for many centuries.

The bath is a lovely, well-decorated mansion in Budapest. A great spot to meet people, do business, and fall in love.

Important to know: You can just visit the bath regularly and enjoy it. It is absolutely worth it. But you can also join the SPARTY. Make sure you check the specific days for sparty. It does not take place every day.

Margaret Island

The island of Margaret  is the city’s central park. Located midway between Margaret Bridge and rpád Bridge on the Danube.

The island is completely devoid of structures, except for a few hotels and sports centres; instead, it serves as a vast recreational area complete with promenades, benches, bike lanes, and a running track, perfect for a romantic outing or family outing.

There includes a Japanese Garden, a petting zoo, a musical fountain, and the Hajós Alfréd National Sports Pool.

The island is accessible by the No. 26 bus from Nyugati station and has its own stop on the regular 4/6 tram line halfway down Margaret Bridge, so driving there isn’t necessary.

Pedal boats, tandem cycles, and other types of bikes are available for rent. Near the northern tip of the island, under the watchful eye of the Water Tower, is a seasonal outdoor performance venue hosting major-label acts throughout the summer.

St Stephen’s Basilica

This is the biggest church in Budapest, with a capacity of up to 8,500 people.

People are visiting the Basilica because to the left of the altar is a glass case containing the mummified right hand of St. Stephen, the patron saint of the cathedral and the first monarch of Hungary.

If that isn’t enough to pique your interest, there’s also a lot of impressive Neoclassical buildings to gawk at.

The 96-meter-tall dome is the centrepiece of the Basilica, and its inside is covered with intricate religious reliefs.

After you’ve explored a little, go up to the cupola for a breathtaking panorama.

St Stephen’s Basilica

Buda Castle

Buda Castle is another hightlight, as mentioned before. It is well-known for its views over the city.

Things to Bring & Pack

There are a few things backpackers should be sure to bring when staying at a party hostel specifically. These items include earplugs (for early mornings and loud roomates), a padlock (lock up your valuables BEFORE going out), headache medicine (always usefful!), and condoms.

Especially for the bigger European cities where pickpocketing is common we recommend wearing trousers with zippers. This limits the chances of stealing from your pockets.

If you choose to take part, be respectful and try to do it in the right way. Avoid small rooms and common areas, and opt for laundry rooms or rooftops.
