Average price for a bed: On average, the price of a hostel in Bali is 5€ to 40€ per night. Prices always depend on season and holidays. Please always check exact rates on Hostelz.com.
The Bali tourist levy: Since February 2024 every foreign visitor pays a one-off levy of €9, on top of any visa fee. It’s once per trip rather than per entry, there’s no child exemption, and you pay it online at the official Love Bali portal (lovebali.baliprov.go.id) before you fly, or at the BRI counter in arrivals at Ngurah Rai. Save the QR code, because it gets checked at some temples and sights as well as at the airport. Plenty of lookalike sites charge more for the same thing, so use the .go.id address.
There’s also a 10% accommodation tax that your hostel adds to the room rate. Check whether the price you’re comparing includes it.
Check-In and Check Out: The average check-in time is from 15:00 (3pm), while the Check-Out time is before 11:00 (11am). Hostels usually offer luggage storage in case you arrive earlier or leave later. Make sure you check if luggage storage is free or if there is an extra cost.
Backpacking Tips For Bali: A few things worth knowing before you go.
- There are more temples here than you could visit in a month, so pick a few. The ones worth the trip are Tanah Lot, Uluwatu, Besakih and Pura Lempuyang Luhur. Cover your shoulders and knees, wear a sarong where one is offered, and don’t climb on anything.

1. Capsule Seminyak, Seminyak
When the owners built Capsule Seminyak, Seminyak they had one idea: a space where people from everywhere would actually meet each other. It worked. Guests get called Aliens, which tells you the tone, and there’s a constant supply of people to swap stories with.
Art runs through the whole place. You see it the moment you walk in, and you can join in on the making of it, which is a better icebreaker than a drinking game.
Rooms have nightlights, power outlets, luggage storage, proper privacy curtains and a terrace to sit out on. The pool and the bar are where everyone ends up. It’s a rare hostel that works for both partying and recovering, and that’s the pitch.
Location: Seminyak, 1.2 km from Petitenget Beach, 1.3 km from Double Six Beach and 1.7 km from Petitenget Temple. Kuta Square is 5.9 km away, Kuta Art Market 7.1 km.

2. SunShot Hostel, Seminyak
Picture a rooftop, a sunset and a shot in your hand. That’s the whole proposition at SunShot Hostel, Seminyak, and it delivers it cheaply.
The location is the other half: minutes from the bars and clubs of Seminyak and Legian, and a short walk to the beaches. The area is built around going out, so don’t come here expecting peace. Come here expecting to meet people who are also not planning to sleep.
Rooms are simple but comfortable, with nightlights, storage and power outlets. Nothing fancy, everything you need. Dinner is included in the price, which at Bali prices is a genuinely good deal, and there are plenty of warungs nearby anyway.
One thing to pack: towels aren’t included, so bring your own.
Location: Legian, 1.5 km from Legian Beach, around 1.7 km from Kuta Beach, 2.4 km from Double Six Beach and 3.3 km from Kuta Square.

3. My Capsule Bali, Canggu
If you want Bali’s nightlife without living inside it, My Capsule Bali, Canggu is the answer. It sits in Pererenan, the quieter, higher-end end of Canggu that hasn’t been overrun yet.
Pererenan Beach is three minutes away, and there are cafés, bars and surf schools all around it without the wall-to-wall crowds of central Canggu.
The rooms are spotless, with power outlets, night lights that have a dark mode, and lockable storage. And the party is scheduled rather than constant: pool parties on Tuesdays, BBQ and karaoke on Thursdays, and Saturday bus parties out to Savaya. That structure is the point. You know which nights are big and which aren’t.
Location: Pererenan, Canggu. 500 m from Pererenan Beach, 800 m from Echo Beach, 1.4 km from Seseh Beach. Tanah Lot Temple is 10 km away, as is Nirwana Golf Course, and Petitenget Temple is 11 km. Kuta Art Market and Bali Mall Galleria are both 17 km.

The bar runs 24/7 and the events get genuinely wild, so be clear about what you’re booking. The flip side is the lounge areas, where a decent portion of the guests spend the day horizontal recovering from the night before. Both things are true at once.

Rooms are spotless and built in traditional Joglo Balinese style. The beds look small and aren’t, and the rooms share an ensuite bathroom. Social gatherings are the main event, and they run most nights.

Things to Bring & Pack
There are a few things backpackers should be sure to bring when staying at a party hostel specifically. These items include earplugs (for early mornings and loud roomates), a padlock (lock up your valuables BEFORE going out), headache medicine (always usefful!), and condoms.
Especially for the bigger European cities where pickpocketing is common we recommend wearing trousers with zippers. This limits the chances of stealing from your pockets.

One of the best things about a hostel is being able to meet new people from every corner of the world. Be sure to talk to people and mingle. Travelling solo is great and life-changing, yet enjoying it with new friends can be even better. Locals especially, can show you hidden secret and some of the best spots in the city.

When to Visit Bali
The dry season runs April to October and it’s the reliable time to come: less rain, better surf on the west coast, everything open. July and August are peak, and Canggu and Seminyak get genuinely busy.
November to March is the wet season, which mostly means a heavy downpour in the afternoon rather than a washed-out day. Beds are cheaper, the island is greener, and the east coast surf is better.
The date to know about is Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, in March. For 24 hours the entire island shuts down. No flights in or out, no traffic, no going outside your accommodation, no lights after dark. Even tourists are expected to stay put. It’s an extraordinary thing to experience and a completely wasted day if you didn’t plan for it, so check the date before you book.
How Many Days Do You Need in Bali?
Ten nights, and even that’s tight if you want to see more than one corner.
Bali isn’t a city break. Split it: three or four nights in Canggu for the surf and the nightlife, a few in Uluwatu for the clifftop parties and the beaches, and a few in Ubud if you want the temples, rice terraces and the slower version.
If you only have a week, pick two areas and skip the third. Trying to do all of it means spending your holiday on the back of a scooter in traffic.
Getting There and Around Bali
Ngurah Rai International (DPS) is in the south, near Kuta, so you’re twenty minutes from Seminyak and closer to an hour from Canggu depending on traffic. Arrange a pickup through your hostel or use Grab or Gojek from the designated pickup area.
Once you’re here, most people rent a scooter. It’s cheap, it’s the only sensible way to cover distance, and it’s also the single biggest risk on this list. Read the safety section below before you rent one.
Grab and Gojek work for cars and bike taxis, but be aware that some areas, including parts of Canggu and Ubud, have local transport cooperatives that restrict app pickups. You’ll see signs. Walk a few minutes out of the zone or use the local driver.
For the Gili Islands, fast boats run from Padangbai and Serangan and take a couple of hours.
Staying Safe in Bali
Bali is a safe place to travel and violent crime against visitors is rare. Two risks are worth taking seriously on a party trip, and both are avoidable.
Scooters. More travellers are hurt on Bali’s roads than by anything else on this island, by a wide margin. Wear the helmet, never ride after drinking, and don’t learn to ride here for the first time. Check that your travel insurance actually covers you, because most policies require the correct licence, which usually means a motorcycle entitlement and an international permit. Riding without one is how a small accident becomes a very large bill.
Methanol in spirits. This one isn’t scaremongering, it’s in the UK and Australian government travel advice. Locally produced spirits and counterfeit branded bottles have been found to contain methanol, which you can’t taste or smell and which causes blindness or worse. It shows up in very cheap cocktails, free-poured spirits and unlicensed bars.
What to do about it is simple and doesn’t ruin your night:
- Stick to beer and wine, or spirits from sealed bottles you watch being opened.
- Be wary of free-poured spirits and cocktails at suspiciously cheap venues, especially around Kuta and Legian.
- Arak from a reputable bar is fine. Arak of unknown origin at a beach party is the risk.
- If anyone develops blurred vision, seeing spots, or gets much worse 12 to 24 hours after drinking, that’s a hospital trip immediately, not a hangover.
Beyond those two: drink spiking is documented in the Kuta, Legian and Seminyak nightlife areas, so keep your drink with you. Use the hostel locker. And take comprehensive travel insurance, because medical care here is good and private care is not cheap.
