Average price for a bed: A bed in a dorm can be as cheap as 10€ up to 15€ per night. A private room in a hostel in Tulum starts from 22€ up to 65€ per night. You can find a list of hostels in Tulum with Private rooms here.

Hostel Location: You need to pick a hostel either in central Tulum or south beach. At North beach, there is not really a great hostel option. Please check our handmade map, we added all hostels and our favorite places.

Tulum City Tax: Although most places seem to include taxes in the price. Some do not. For example, Selina has a 19% tax payable on arrival, and the price is not included in the online booking. Make sure you research beforehand to avoid any unwanted surprises.

Important: Many travelers get pickpocketed on the bus journey between Tulum and Cancún. Keep your valuables on you and do not put your small backpack under your seat.

1. Lum Hostel (our favorite!)

You’ll get a very warm welcome from the staff at Lum Hostel. They’ll plan out daily adventures and take you out to explore the nearby nightlife! But first, make sure you take advantage of the on-site bar which is open until 10pm.

This is the hostel we always stay at, every single time!!

So why is it #2 you might ask? Well, simply because we have to have a #1 and #2 and it really depends on your own travel style which one you will enjoy more. The location is the main difference; other than that, you will love both either way.

During the day it would be silly not to make use of the FREE bike hire. If you’re not feeling so energetic, collapse in the living room to Netflix and chill.

Connect with their free WiFi and tell your friends how awesome your trip has been.

The dorm rooms here are basic and comfortable. The beds are pod-like for that added privacy and minimal disturbance from your roomies.

In all our Tulum solo travel guides we share the absolute best hostels in town for solo travellers. As for Tulum, it really depends on if you’re looking to socialize or enjoy a bit of ‘me time’.

It has a restaurant, bar, garden, terrace, and a shared lounge. The accommodation offers a 24-hour front desk, tour desk, and shuttle services if you are planning activities around. Best Hostels in Tulum, Mexico the complete guide and overview for backpackers

CLOSED: Bambu Gran Palas and Cenote

Update: Our former #2 hostel has permanently closed.

Our #2 hostel is for backpackers with an adventurous streak.

You may have guessed it from its name, but this hostel has its own private Cenote, and you can even swim here. This is already pretty cool! If you are on a tight budget and want to skip an expensive trip to a Cenote, you could just stay here.

As for rooms or dorms to choose from, you have

  • private rooms with beautiful views
  • beds in dorms
  • double beds in dorms (for couples and a cheaper option than the private room)

Bambu Gran Palas and Cenote is totally environmentally friendly and sustainable as it operates on solar power – 100%! It’s by far the only hostel in our entire guide that’s totally solar-powered.

You can socialize in their bar with other travelers, by the way, there’s a bar in the swing! Or you can swim by in the clear water in the midst of the hostel.

The hostel is a walking distance from the beach. Keep in mind: from the south beach! It is near Selina Tulum we cover as #4 on this list. Bring your towel and bathe in the sun, read your book, or get lost in the music of the waves.

Perhaps one of the best things about this hostel is that its family run. It has an easy vibe and you’d feel like an extended part of Norma’s family. She’s the owner, just so you know.

CLOSED: Hostal Chalupa

Update: This hostel has closed. We leave this content for your information.

The bike for hire here in Hostal Chalupa is pretty cheap.

The staff in hostel Chalupa are very welcoming, even the breakfast is welcoming!

It’s also close to the beach so you can grab your towel and lie down for that early sun.

The hostel is small but the atmosphere here makes up for the space. You’d think you’d have small beds but surprise! The beds are actually big and comfortable.

CLOSED: The FREE Hostel Tulum

Update: This hostel has permanently closed. We’ve kept this content here for your information.

The FREE Hostel makes you feel lucky because it’s close to everything. It’s near the beach, it’s near a 7/11 store and everybody loves that, and it’s close to the ruins too.

FYI: This used to be called Lucky Traveler Hostel, All Inclusive.

But if you’re looking for the bustle and hustle of the city center, this one isn’t the right fit for you. The FREE Hostel is a bit private and far from the town.

You’ll fall in love with the peace and serenity, and just a little welcomed noise from socialization.
