It’s charged per room rather than per person, so how a hostel applies it to a dorm bed varies. Properties with fewer than five rooms are exempt. Langkawi also adds a small local tourism fee on top, typically only a few ringgit at budget properties. Expect to settle it in cash at check-in, because booking sites often don’t include it.
Check-In and Check Out: The average check-in time is from 15:00 (3pm), while the Check Out time is before 11:00 (11am). Hostels usually offer luggage storage in case you arrive earlier or leave later. Make sure you check if luggage storage is free or if there is an extra cost.

Since 2019 this hostel has provided fantastic capsule style dorm rooms that are set to impress.
Each capsule is kitted out with everything you possibly need for ultimate relaxation and sleep. Privacy curtain, light, USB dock, security lockers – you name it!

When to Visit Langkawi
November to April is the dry season and the reliable time to come. Clear skies, calm sea, best conditions for island hopping and the cable car, which closes in high winds.
December to February is peak, so book ahead. It’s also when Chinese New Year lands, and the island fills with domestic visitors.
May to October is the wet season, which mostly means a heavy afternoon downpour rather than a lost day. Beds are cheaper, the island is greener, and the waterfalls are actually running, which they often aren’t in March and April.
How Many Days Do You Need in Langkawi?
Three to four nights. That covers a beach day, the SkyCab and Sky Bridge, an island-hopping boat trip, and a day riding around the north of the island for the waterfalls.
Two nights works if Langkawi is a stopover between Thailand and the Malaysian mainland, which it often is. A week is easy to fill if you’d rather slow down.
Getting There and Around Langkawi
Getting there: Langkawi International Airport (LGK) is about 20 minutes from Pantai Cenang, with frequent short flights from Kuala Lumpur and Penang. The alternative is the ferry from Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis on the mainland, or from Koh Lipe in Thailand during the season, which makes Langkawi a handy border crossing.
Getting around: rent a scooter. It’s cheap, the roads are quiet by Southeast Asian standards, and the island is far too spread out to walk. Wear a helmet and check your travel insurance covers you. Car rental is also inexpensive if there are a few of you.
There’s no useful public transport, so the alternative is taxis, which are metered in theory and negotiated in practice. Grab works here too.
Is Langkawi Safe?
Yes, very. Langkawi is a relaxed, family-friendly island and crime against travellers is rare.
The real risks are the ordinary tropical ones. Scooter accidents are the big one, so go slow on the wet roads. Jellyfish appear at Cenang in some months, and the beach flags are worth paying attention to. And the sun here is stronger than the sea breeze makes it feel.
One local note: Kedah is one of Malaysia’s more conservative states. Nobody will bother you in a bikini on Cenang beach, but cover up when you leave it.

It was a cosy little place with just 3 rooms holding four beds each, and an easy one minute walk from the main area of Pantai Cenang.
Details such as privacy curtains, a common kitchen and help with booking fun activities created a warm home-away-from-home.
