Things To Do in Foz do Iguacu
1. Iguaçu Falls
Topping the list of places to go here in Foz do IguaΓ§u has to be the awe-inspiring IguaΓ§u Falls. There are not many places in the world that can equal the sight of the sheer forces of nature on display here and itβs a place you are sure to never forget.
This special place is well known as one of the natural wonders of the world. It has 250 or more individual waterfalls spread over an enormous 2.7-kilometre wide area and here you can get up close to the flow on the many easy-access walkways and viewing points.
Devilβs Throat or Garganta do Diabo in Portuguese is the tallest of the falls at 97m high. You really will get a proper understanding of the colourful naming once you enter the viewpoints!
If you have the budget itβs well worth going on one of the fun boat tours. These tours actually go under a part of the waterfall and provide a unique perspective of the falls. Try and book ahead with a reputable ticket agent as the boats fill up fast!
Donβt forget your waterproofs and a dry bag and be careful with your cameras and devices as it gets wet and windy fast and the walkways can be slippery. Make sure you take another day for a trip to the Argentinian side. Here, you get a grand overview of the falls and a better idea of the scale and size of this place.
2. Itaipu Dam
If man-made wonders are your thing then donβt forget to take a tour of the massive Itaipu Dam. This is the second largest hydroelectric dam in the world and really is an engineering wonder. It is 8 km long and stands 196 metres high.
It is providing all of Paraguayβs electricity and a lot for Brazil in an emission-less green way. The tour actually takes you inside the dam to see the turbines in action!
3. Central Areas
Visit Parque das Aves, a bird park focused on the conservation of the birds of the Atlantic Rainforest and home to many varied species. A walk around here will really help you relax and if you keep your eyes open you may see some really rare and beautiful wildlife.
Take a tour of the beautiful Chen Tien Buddhist Temple or walk around the impressive Omar Ibn Al-Khattab mosque, the largest in Latin America. Not such popular attractions but a nice way to break up a day in the cityβs central areas and find a little peace and relaxation.
Get a selfie at the three borders landmark and viewpoint. From here you can see Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay and get a great snap!
If you love a bargain then take another day to go just across the bridge on the Paraguay border to Ciudad del Este or to the Argentine duty-free shop if you head that way.
Top tips: For waterfall tours, jungle trekking, climbing or other outdoor pursuits ask at the hostel, look online and speak to local agents. There are a vast number of operators with different pricing and offers so itβs always always a good idea to shop around.
Remember the public buses go literally everywhere and are without a doubt the cheapest and easiest way to get around. If in doubt, get on the bus to central at your nearest stop and then find the right bus stand for your destination from there.
