Make sure you read our big guide to 24 best hostels in Croatia, including our own itinerary (and a few more gems!)

Good to know: We also have detailed guide about the best yoga retreats in Croatia.

Quick Introduction to Dubrovnik Hostels

Average price for a bed: A bed in a dorm can be as cheap as 6€ up to 35€ per night. A private room in a hostel in Dubrovnik starts from 29€ up to 80€ per night.

The seasonal difference is huge here. And it also makes a big difference if you stay in the Old Town or outside.

This is a rough average to give you an idea. The summer is always much more expensive. As prices always depend on season and holidays. We always check exact rates on Hostelworld.com or Booking.com.

Check-In and Check Out: The average check-in time is from 15:00 (3pm), while the Check Out time is before 11:00 (11am). Hostels usually offer luggage storage in case you arrive earlier or leave later. Make sure you check if luggage storage is free or if there is an extra cost at the place you are planning to book.

Dubrovnik City Tax: Be aware that the 1.33€ tax is not included in the booking price of any of the hostels mentioned in this article. It’s a requirement to pay this on arrival so make sure you have enough extra coins when you check in.

Hostel Location: Dubrovnik is actually more than the famous Old Town. Yet, this is exactly where the magic happens. We recommend staying inside the Old Town. It is much nicer. You can wake up early to have the city for yourself (before 8am) and at night you can enjoy live music in the pubs and eat out until late at night.

Game of Thrones: Yes, Dubrovnik is huge for GOT fans. You will see a lot of statues, masks, merchandise, souvenirs…even as non-GOT fan, it is quite cool to see. As a GOT fan, you can either join a paid GOT walking tour or do a self-guided tour on all Game of Thrones locations in Dubrovnik.

The hostels downtown are more pricey, but 100% worth it. A good investment in your experience!

Cheapest Hostels in Dubrovnik, Croatia

Of course, there are always cheap hostels. And certainly, you can find cheap hostels in Dubrovnik.

Yet, we think, it’s not worth it to go with the cheapest hostel out there.

Why?

Usually the price is not that much different, but in Dubrovnik it can actually make a big difference. Like 10€ or more even.

We said this already, but again: we think you should stay in the Old Town. It adds much more fun and value to your Dubrovnik trip. Seriously.

Dubrovnik is one of the few towns we recommend staying in the center.

The city is packed during the day. And it clears when the sun sets. Therefore, you can have the city almost for yourself in the morning when you stay in the Old Town.

The same goes for the nightlife; you can enjoy it much more when you do not need to take a 30 minutes bus back to your hostel.

The first time we traveled here, we stayed outside. We spent quite some time in transport, than actually exploring. That was kind of annoying. You can learn from our mistake.

However, if you are traveling on a shoe-string budget and you wanna save every penny, there are ways to find where to stay in Dubrovnik on a budget.

  1. Open Hostelworld with full list of accommodations in Dubrovnik
  2. Order the listing by price

It is as simple as that.

Here’s our guide how to book hostels on Hostelworld.

Yet again, make sure you check all the other costs like breakfast or extra transport. The list above highlights our top hostels in Dubrovnik, we will stick with them since you can expect a fun quality stay here.

Here is a map of Dubrovnik (below) to show you the actual size of the city – and the Old town only.

For going to the Old Town from Gruz port Ferry international, you need to take one of the following city buses: no.1A, no.1B, no.3.

A bus ticket for one ride costs roughly $2. A day bus ticket costs roughly around $4.40.

Always check the updated rates.

Also, there is a difference if you buy the ticket inside the bus with the driver or at the kiosk.

You can see the size of the city is much bigger.

BUT: Only the Old Town is the absolute beautiful part you want to visit. The rest…well, skip it and better go to places like Korcula Island.

You see, this is why we insist on the old town and staying central. Skip that mistake and enjoy the actual Old Town! Here is a map of Dubrovnik Old City.

Dubrovnik with a car –  Where to park in Dubrovnik?

There is 4 main ways to travel to Dubrovnik. By plane, by bus, by ferry and by car.

Let us talk about the car.

If you think you can park your car in the Old Town Dubrovnik, you may also think you can park your car in Downtown Venice Italy; not gonna happen!

Sorry for the confusion: PARKING in the old town is NOT possible. Forget that!

You will need to park outside the old town.

Dubrovnik is actually much bigger than the Old Town. The city stretches even more North.

You see it in the Dubrovnik map Old Town we added above.

There are in the North is less visited, and this is where you can park in Dubrovnik your car – even for free.

The area around Lapad is a good neighborhood to park your car, even for free. You can then take a public bus to the city center and relax.

Cannot find a free parking in Dubrovnik?

Then try the parking at General Hospital Dubrovnik. It is a public parking and it costs 10€-15€ per day.

Check the map below, we marked the parking area for you.

Smart to know: If you were planning to park your car near to Old Town, you should get ready to pay  around 10€/ hour in the Zone 0. This zone is a small carpark just outside of the Old City gates and is the most expensive public parking in Dubrovnik.

For that 10€ per hour, better get a delicious Pizza, seriously. Here’s a guide to parking in Dubrovnik.

Backpacking Croatia and How Long to Stay

We have already covered this several times: The Old Town is the #1 reason you are here for sure.

It is absolutely gorgeous, no doubt.

There is even beaches and numerous day trips offered to go around the area.

However, we recommend visiting the Old Town only and then head out to the islands. Dubrovnik is beautiful, yes. The beaches can be great too, but they are not the absolute best in the country; obviously.

The rest of the country will be even more impressive in terms of beaches, landscape, people and food – and less pricey and touristy.

Our recommend for an itinerary in Croatia would be starting in Dubrovnik for 2 days and then take the ferry to Korcula Island.

You will have less tourists, enjoy a richer and more authentic food culture and can kick-back enjoying the island-life. At Korcula you can go snorkeling, take a bike around, and visit many museums too.

After Korcula, it is time to hit Hvar Island.

It is probably the most famous Croatian island and in the Adriatic Sea, located off the Dalmatian coast. Here you can either dive into the fun nightlife or keep exploring the beautiful landscape.

As for cool hostels in Hvar, we have to recommendations:

  1. Cast Away Eco Village Campsite – with amazing sea views and far from the city of Hvar
  2. For staying in Hvar City: The White Rabbit Hostel; perfect for solo-travelers

After Hvar, you will add Split to your bucket list. Another city with a rich nightlife and lots of culture.

The journey continues. To keep it simple, here is our backpacking itinerary for Croatia:

  • Dubrovnik – 2 days
  • Korcula – 2 days
  • Hvar – 2-3 days
  • Split –  2 days (read the guide to best hostels in Split)
  • Trogir – 1 day/ night
  • Primosten – 1 day
  • Krka National Park – 1 day (this is the national park you can actually swim!)
  • Zadar – 2 days (stay at Boutique Hostel Forum)
  • Senj – 1 day (a former town run by pirates back in the day)
  • Plitvicka Lakes National Park – 1 day
  • Zagreb – 2-3 days (stay at the 5 Star Hostel in Zagreb and kick-back and rewind)

Again, check the map below. There we put the itinerary for Croatia.
