3 Best Hostels in Cozumel, Mexico – Diving Paradise & Tanning by the Pool

3 Best Hostels in Cozumel, Mexico

It’s time to head to a stunning Mexican island to swim with sea turtles and discover the absolute best hostels in Cozumel, Mexico – are you ready?

Important: Cozumel is the name of the island. San Miguel is the main city on the island and the area where our top 3 hostels are located.

Famed for its scuba diving opportunities, Cozumel is mostly undeveloped. It’s the kind of place you go to if you want to dive and socialise in a chill beach environment.

The hostels here provide cosy rooms, refreshing amenities (aka swimming pool) and a fun atmosphere perfect for mingling.

Our favorite hostels in Cozumel are:

  1. Amigos Hostel - best for Older Travellers
  2. Hostel Auikyani - best for Solo Travellers
  3. Albatros Suites by Bedsfriends - best for Couples

Quick Introduction to Cozumel

Average price for a bed: Hostels in Cozumel cost 10€ – 12€ per night for a bed in a dorm. A private room starts from 30€ up to 113€ per night. This is a rough average just to give you an idea.

Prices always depend on season and holidays. Please always check exact rates on Hostelworld.com or Booking.com.

Check-In and Check Out: The average check-in time is from 15:00 (3pm), while the Check Out time is before 11:00 (11am). Hostels usually offer luggage storage in case you arrive earlier or leave later. Make sure you check if luggage storage is free or if there is an extra cost.

Party Hostels in Cozumel: We had a good look and didn’t come across any hostel advertising itself as a party place. Cozumel is more about diving, beaching and enjoying a relaxed atmosphere. However, Hostel Auikyani has a bar next door and holds weekend parties – head here if you’d like that kind of atmosphere.

Ferry to Cozumel: There are two companies that run a ferry service from Playa Del Carmen to Cozumel. The crossing takes around 40 minutes departing from the Ferry Pier downtown. Check out the 3 best hostels in Playa del Carmen.

👨‍👩‍👦 Family Hostel: Albatros Suites

🤿 For Scuba Diving: Blue Magic Hostel

1. Amigos Hostel

Amigos Hostel is a true home-from-home and that’s mainly because of the exceptional service of owner Kathy.

As soon as you walk through the door until the moment you leave, you’ll be taken care of and made to feel part of the furniture.

It’s no wonder we’ve placed Amigos as our number one Cozumel hostel choice!

Warning: Don’t be surprised if you keep extending your stay here. Many guests stay for long periods of time so it’s possible to make really good friends here.

Let’s have a look at some of the perks:

  • Large tropical fruit garden
  • Multilevel outdoor pool
  • Bicycle & snorkel rental
  • Large communal palapa

If you’re not in the garden sunning it up, you can head to the palapa where there’s plenty to keep you entertained.

The space is complete with a shared kitchen, pool table, darts, DVDs and a small book exchange.

As there is no organised activities or hostel bar, the atmosphere here is very relaxed and peaceful. Because of that, it attracts the slightly older traveller.

Having said that, the property is largely made up of shared 8-bed dorms, plus one private room which has its own kitchenette.

Have a chat with Kathy if you’d like to book diving and/or snorkelling trips on the island.

Location: Set in central Cozumel, just a 10-minute walk from Chilangos Restaurant and a major supermarket.

2. Hostel Auikyani

Let’s move on to a more lively accommodation that’s suited to sociable creatures. Welcome to Hostel Auikyani.

This is a brand new, cool and cosy little place that’s a consistently high rated hostel.

Cosy is certainly a word to describe Auikyani, as the spaces are small and compact. The upside to this is that dorms are kept small with as little as 4-beds, and a slightly larger 6-bed option.

If you prefer, you can book a budget double room for two.

Note: Some of the rooms do not have windows, so bear this in mind.

Honestly, we’d recommend only using the room for sleeping, not hanging out. Anyway, there’s a wonderful neighbour bar called “La Cagua Maria” which is a gorgeous space for mingling.

From here you can hang out on its big terrace and watch the sunset over the Caribbean Sea. Yes please!

Back at the hostel there is also a comfy common area with sofas and small kitchenette setup with lots of necessities except a stove.

Make up for it by taking advantage of the unlimited free tea, coffee & drinking water!

Wednesday is Ladies Night and there are often party vibes galore during the weekends over at the bar. These days the music gets a little louder.

Location: Right in the city centre of San Miguel, looking towards the ocean and just one block from the island ferry pier. A short walk and you’ll come across the best bars, cafes, clubs, dive centres… you name it!

3. Albatros Suites by Bedsfriends

And last but not least, a hotel-hostel hybrid right by the beach!

As we already mentioned, Beds Friends Hostel was our 5 star hostel before it sadly closed its doors. Albatros Suites by Bedsfriends is the newly opened property by Bedsfriends and is already a big hit.

Important: There are only suites available here, no shared dorm rooms.

Yet, we couldn’t not include this property in our top three as it’s not very often you come across a hostel lifestyle that’s created with purely private rooms.

It’s a super choice for couples, families and small groups that appreciate their private space, yet also like the option of meeting people.

It’s possible to book a suite for 2, 6 and 9 people (family suite) depending on the size of your party. Air conditioning plus many other fancy perks are included.

What about socialising?

There’s still plenty of shared space to do that easily.

You can lounge in the garden and outdoor swimming pool, chat in the cosy living room and meet new friends over food and drinks at the Sereno Roof Bar & Restaurant.

Oh, and there’s even private beach access and free breakfast!

Friendly staff can also help you with booking scuba diving excursions.

What about the cheapest hostels in Cozumel?

Of course, there are always cheap hostels. But how do you actually find them? When you are traveling on a shoe-string budget and you want to save every dollar, there are ways to find the cheapest places in Cozumel.

  1. Open Hostelz.com with a full list of all hostels in Cozumel
  2. add your dates
  3. Order the listings by price

Simple as that.

Hostelz.com is a price comparison site for hostels. They list every single one in the world and tells you exactly which website is cheaper to use.

Another smart Tip: Check what is actually included, and what is excluded. Take a closer look at the location, too. A further location might mean more costs in transport.

Best Hostels in Cozumel for Solo Travellers?

What is seriously the best hostel in Cozumel for solo-travellers?

For those that are keen to meet other travellers and enjoy lively vibes, book your stay at Hostel Auikyani.

It’s certainly the best hostel we’ve come across that’s obviously focused more around solo travellers in design and atmosphere.

Weekend parties and the neighbouring bar offer an easy way to break the ice.

As the rooms are pretty small, it’s less likely people will hide away here. Drop your bags and head to the cosy living room or to the terrace overlooking the ocean.

Best Hostel in Cozumel for Scuba Diving?

So, whilst it’s possible to book diving excursions through any hostel you stay at, it’s also nice to stay at a hostel that offers diving directly if that’s your main reason for visiting Cozumel.

If you’re a complete dive nut, we suggest staying at Blue Magic Hostel.

The most important thing: if you dive with these guys, you stay for free!

“Whether you do your first “Discover Dive” are certified, or are getting your Professional Association of Diving Instructors, your dorm stay is free!”

To top if off, the dorm beds come with a privacy curtain so that you can get a really good night’s sleep after a big day in the water.

Note: Other dive hostels you may be searching for such as Beachouse Dive Hostel Cozumel and 2tank Dive Hostel have closed.
